Thanks for the feedback Chovoss. I got the line taking b4 from the exact book you mention. Sometimes certain variations just suit people's style of play I think and d6 didn't really suit mine.

I was a little careless in fairness playing d5 and giving a way a pawn. I think really that's all that did it, after that it was a pretty straightforward win for him because I didn't have any compensation.

Do you happen to have a blog yourself?

2...d6 is not a mistake. I often play 1...d6 and then 2..e5 and get a good position regularly. The idea is to play moves like f5, Nf6, Be7. This type of defense is examined in "An explosive chess opening repertoire for black" by Yrola and Tella. I used to take the pawn on b4 but it seems easy for white to get a good position so I don't play that way anymore.

If you’d like a tool for managing your time and projects, you can use this web-application inspired by David Allen’s GTD:

http://www.Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage and prioritize your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
Syncs with Evernote, and also comes with mobile-web, Android and iPhone apps.

Hi James,

Enjoyed the top 10 article. Also pleased the Nimzowitch Zugswang and the "other" Byrne - Fischer game made the site. Big fan of that game, especially the subtlety around Nxg2 and d4.

Hope all is well mate and you're back playing chess soon!

Thanks Brian,

Your comments are much appreciated.

Sure, Anand, Kramnik and Steinitz are all exceptional candidates who could have made the cut. Unfortunately I can only fit 10 players in. As well, my choices were made on influence as well as chess playing abilities and undoubtably the likes of Nimzovitch had a HUGE impact on the progression of chess theory and theoretical debate.

More comments always welcome. Thanks for stopping by...!

Emanuel Lasker should be on the list, his record was much better than Nimzovich and nearly everyone else. Nimzovich might have oontributed more in terms of teaching chess but this is a list of the best chess players not teachers. Other strong candidates for this list include Anand, Kramnik, Steinitz.

Thanks for positng, these lists are always fun.
